I have a theory, and it is a theory, mind you that both creationism and evoluton can be possible in its own respects. God created the word in six days and on the seventh day he rested. But what is a day to God? Did it not say in scripture "What is a day but a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years one day?" As evolution is a theory, my theory is that God, in all his glory, commenced the big bang to happen, "..and then there was light." Starting everything. Who is to say that thousands upon millions of years couldn't have passed in that period of time? What is a day but a thousand years to the Lord, and a thousand years one day?
You my argue, "but it says in the bible that the world was around only about 7000 years" That is an inacururate count of all the years that people lived upon the earth at the time from the creation of man to now. A man, one day, decided to count the ages of all men, back to the beginning of time, and decided "Hey! we've only been here 7000 years!" And it was taken as fact. But in theory, the world could have taken millions of years before we ever even stepped foot onto it's soil and plucked the first fruit.
This is going against everything you've ever been taught about creationism, and evolution, for that matter. But I would like to remind you that it remains a Theory, but a very possible one at that.
Another point to make is teh mention of the leviathon in the bible. Many beleve this leviathon to be a dinosaur of sorts. But evolution proves that dinosaurs exsisted years and yars before man, through both carbon dating and sediment deposits. Dinosaur bones have never been found in the same layers of sediment as humans. Ever. So when were these monstrous beasts here? When did they roam the earth? Before man. Before the sixth day, when God created every creepeth thing that creepeths on the earth. Leviethons were the name of any beast that was larger than man, a beast that could strike fear in their hearts. This leviethon could be a whale, an elephant,or a crocodile. There is also mention of it spewing fire and having scales, i believe (please check me if i am wrong) but that sounds more like a dragon than a dinosaur, don't you think?
Again, this is a theory, and never one I would teach, please, beleve in creationism above all else, but this topic is somthing of interest, no?
In any discussion, but particularly when it is a hotly-debated topic like this, It is important to start with clearly-defined terms.
Many Christians understand "evolution" simply the way you describe it, namely that we take the scientific evidence that is available and attempt to understand the revealed truths of Scripture in light of it. While this is perfectly legitimate, it is important to note that this is not what *everyone* means by evolution.
Webster defines evolution as "a theory that the various types of animals and plants have their origin in other preexisting types and that the distinguishable differences are due to modifications in successive generations." I think this is a very good definition, especially since it is impartial and specifically refers to eveolution as a *theory*. There are many who insist that evolution must be considered an indisputable fact.
There are, however, some real problems with evolution as a scientific theory. When I was in high school (1967-1971) *Neo-Darwinism* was still very much in vogue. This was the theory that sought to explain the mechanism of evolution in terms of *genetic mutation*--something completely unknown in Darwin's time. Hundreds of experiments involving billions--perhaps trillions--of fruit flies were performed, producing all sorts of genetic mutations. The problem, however, was that none of these mutations ever led to the fruit flies' evolving into a new species.
By the late 1970's Neo-Darwinism was abandoned, and no one ever talks about it anymore. This wouldn't be so bad, except for the fact that to this day no scientist can adequately explain the mechanism by which evolution supposedly takes place in terms of genetics. So much for evolution as an indisputable fact.
The Creation Vs. Evolution issue is a timely issue, with the controversy raised by the Answers In Genesis Museum. In response to the current atmosphere of the Creation Vs. Evolution debate, the church of Christ in Danville VA is having Brad Harrub, Ph.D. to hold a meeting to discuss these things. He is the founder of Focus Press (www.focuspress.org) and holds his PhD. in Neurobiology and Anatomy. Anyone interested can visit our web site at http://DanvilleChurchOfChrist.net.
With that said, just let me respond to the idea that we can somehow harmonize the Creation accounts of the Bible with the false theory of Evolution. When we are told that God created the universe in six days (Genesis 1-2), it is very clear that the meaning of a day is a literal 24-hour day. All through the Bible, when the days of creation are referred to it is always referred to in such a way as to indicate a literal 24-hour day and not a figurative day of thousands or millions of years. Moses even said, "and the morning and the evening where the ____ day." How much clearer could it be that a literal 24-hour day is what is being referred to!?!
When Peter said that one day is as a thousand years with the Lord (2 Peter 3:8), it is in response to the false teachers saying that since Christ hadn't come yet he wasn't going to come. Peter is pointing out that we can't hold God to our timetable but, rather, we must be prepared for the coming of Christ because we don't know when it will be. It will be according to God's timetable, not ours. The reference to a thousand years being as one day with the Lord does not mean that when the Bible refers to a day it is anything other than a 24-hour literal day.
The information you have given regarding the evidence of Dinosaurs never living at the same time with man is patently false. The fact is that there are several sources of factual evidence of man and dinosaur living at the same time. In fact, dinosaur and human remains have been found together. There have been several instances of such evidence being covered up! True science doesn't need to cover up the facts but the false religion of Evolution has to suppress the evidence to prevent being exposed as a lie.
As regarding the possibility of anything existing for thousands or millions of years before man came on the scene, that would mean Jesus was wrong when he said that man had been there from the beginning (Matthew 19:4). Was Jesus ignorant of how HE MADE THE WORLD!?! (Col. 1:16). If each day was millions of years then how could Jesus say that he made man in the beginning? Day six would not have been in the beginning but millions of years after the beginning. Do you believe Jesus was ignorant or lying? If you believe what you have said about Evolution then you only have those two choices. Please let us know which one you will choose - Ignorant or Lying.
